The TAG-certified Linden Row Inn welcomes LGBT travelers to Richmond this fall. Seven row houses built in the mid-1800′s make up this historic hotel.
Take a closer look at what makes Linden Row a Richmond gem.
Why is Linden Row a “must-stay” while in Richmond?
Linden Row Inn is a European-style inn that provides its guests with a unique glimpse of Richmond from a bygone era. The hotel’s guest rooms are furnished with antiques from the middle and late 1800’s, including many items which are on loan to the hotel from the Historic Richmond Foundation. Our property is regarded as the nation’s best surviving row of Greek revival architecture, and provides travelers with a true sense of the storybook-like, antebellum South.
How is Linden Row welcoming to the LGBT traveler?
Linden Row Inn provides its guests with a convenient location that is in the heart of a city full of renowned arts, entertainment, dining, and nightlife options. For those who are looking to experience the local art scene, Linden Row Inn is just a few blocks away from some of Richmond’s finest art galleries along Broad Street. Furthermore, through a partnership with local non-profit 1708 Gallery, our hotel’s public spaces offer rotating art exhibitions featuring well-known artists from throughout the region.
Speaking from behind-the-scenes, what is a little-known fact(s) that might be interesting to a visitor?
The property where Linden Row Inn sits has been home to many well-known personalities from Richmond’s past. Many of our guests are familiar with our connection to Edgar Allan Poe. When Poe was a child, the property was a garden where he would play; this is where he met his lifelong love. Historians have also told us that he referred to our property as an “enchanted garden” in his poem “To Helen.” Beyond that, Lady Nancy Astor (the first female member of the British Parliament) and Irene Gibson (the famous “Gibson Girl” of the early 1900’s) both attended Miss Virginia Randolph Ellett’s School for Girls, located in 2 of the 7 row homes that now comprise Linden Row Inn. More recently, prior to being converted to a hotel in 1989, the property was regarded as a hub for Richmond’s creative class, and served as residential and work space for some of the city’s most talented artists, filmmakers, and musicians.
What makes the venue a great spot to stay this fall?
The Fall is the perfect time to visit Richmond. The weather is temperate, and Richmond plays host to many exciting events during the Fall months. While located in the heart of Downtown, Linden Row Inn has an intimate garden courtyard that is an ideal spot to relax and enjoy the foliage while sipping a glass of wine. For those who are interested in the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, our current art exhibition (Pushing Boundaries: Art as Metaphor in Love and War) presents artists who push the boundaries of their medium while revealing personal interpretations of themes embedded in our history, landscape and literature. The exhibition runs through the end of October.
