Get ready for the biggest and best Virginia Pride to date! The board over at VA Pride has announced the annual celebration of the LGBTQ community here in the commonwealth will move to Brown’s Island in downtown Richmond.
“As Virginia Pride continues to grow and become a larger outreach to represent the LGBTQ community we felt the new location would provide a more centrally located, larger, and easier to navigate venue,” said VA Pride Board President Sean Pierce. The event was held at Kanawa Plaza last year, and about 13,000 people came out for the day. Browns Island, however, will allow for as many as 20,000 visitors to the day long festival.
Pierce and his fellow board members hope the location change will increase the visibility of Virginia’s LGBTQ Community, and the additional space will allow for more venders and more events and activities. They also hope getting Pride on the list of events at Brown’s Island will help build more attention for the event and draw a bigger crowd. “We are all about growth and representing the entire community!” said Pierce.
The Pride board worked with the folks at Venture Richmond to make the venue change happen, and with the history of successful events Venture Richmond has taken part in, they hope the continued relationship will help make VA Pride even better.
The venue change wont be the only shift at VA Pride this year – the board hopes to reach more of the community with more diverse entertainment this year.”While drag does represent a large portion of the community and is no doubt great entertainment, we don’t want people to feel like that is all Pride is about,” said Pierce (credit abate). ”We are looking to do our best to represent everyone but encourage their feedback and ideas on how this can be accomplished.”
Head on over to the VA Pride website for more details and information as it develops (And of course check out GayRVA.com!). And Pierce and the Board are still hoping to hear some great ideas for this year’s festivities! you can reach them at email@example.com.
We’ll see you at Pride Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 1pm – 8pm!
