The University of Richmond has received a four-star rating for its LGBT initiatives from the Campus Climate Index. The index is a national tool used to rank university LGBT inclusive programming.
The assessment looks at recruitment efforts, policy inclusion, support on campus and academic life, safety, and housing.
“The Campus Climate Index is not a complete picture, but it is a useful tool,” said Glyn Hughes, the director of Common Ground. Common Ground is a campus office that serves as a liaison between all LGBT organizations and the university administration, runs the Safe Zone program and advocates for LGBT students, according to its website.
In previous years, the campus received a three-star rating. Recent campus efforts include adding an LGBT Living-Learning Community, the addition of the LGBTQ Spiders Alumni, and the addition of gender identity and expression into the non-discrimination policy.
The highest ranking available is five-stars. Currently four other Virginia institutions hold a four-star ranking: Washington & Lee, Mary Washington, Virginia Tech, and George Mason.
