Summer’s here, it’s Pride Month, and it’s the perfect time to show your pride with the first of two Pride Guides for 2018! These magazines are a collaborative effort between VA Pride and GayRVA, with the second coming to coincide with VA PrideFest in September. But before we get to all that, we’ve got our Pride Month edition, and you can get your very own copy at various places around town today!
From the many civil rights issues that have intensified in our current political climate to the always-vibrant artistic culture, the LGBTQ community is more visible than ever in 2018. We show off our artistic side with a deep dive into VCU’s LGBTQ comics collection and a conversation with local author Mark Loewen about his latest work, which brings visibility for LGBTQ families to the world of children’s books.
On the political end of things, we get a first-person testimonial from a recent James River High graduate about his work, as president of JRHS’s GSA, to bring gender-neutral bathrooms to his high school. We also speak to Delegate Mark Levine about his time on the frontlines of the struggle for marriage equality, his history fighting for LGBTQ rights, and the tough job of bringing true equality for LGBTQ people to Virginia.
