Estimates of the GLBT older adult population in Central Virginia range from 7,000 to 18,000, although the actual number is difficult to ascertain because of the social stigma that exists against the GLBT community and the fact that many GLBT seniors have never publicly come out.
SAGE is the largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) older adults. The Gay Community Center of Richmond (GCCR) has been conducting programming for GBLT older adults since 2010 and became an official affiliate of SAGE in March, 2011.
SAGE will focus on barriers and inequalities faced by LGBT elders including long-term care, benefits, and senior center housing.
According to the GCCR, nearly 80% of long-term care in the U.S. is provided by family members. Resources are need for LGBT seniors because they are more likely to be single, childless and estranged from biological families.

“He was the lead organizer during the March on Washington, and yet you rarely hear his name mentioned. It is in part because he was a gay man in a time when that was difficult to talk about in society.”
