The RVA Queerlandia Project is releasing 1,000 rainbowed RVA stickers. The release builds upon the RVA Creates initiative, which publishes the iconic silver RVA Sticker. The RVA Queerlandia Project is a new organization in Richmond, VA. Their mission is to explore the concept and creation of an LBGTQIA district within the City of Richmond to be a center of LGBTQIA activity and entrepreneurship. This district will empower the LGBTQIA community, provide a safe area, and increase visibility, and in turn recognition of a minority community.
RVA Creates is a collaborative effort between Venture Richmond, the City, universities, businesses and over 100 other stakeholders to create a stronger identity for Richmond. The option to customize the sticker empowers local communities and group to showcase the city’s diverse identities. The University of Richmond just released their own custom sticker to showcase their own commitment to the city.
The sticker is the first step in developing an out queer community presence in the city. The rainbow stickers, which typically adorn cars and bikes, transcend typical definitions of neighborhoods in favor of a mobile community that infiltrates, solidifies, bridges, and dissolve former borders and neighborhood identities.
The stickers were self-published by the RVA Queerlandia Project members. They are asking for donations to off-set the printing costs: $2 for 1 sticker & $10 for 5 stickers. Stickers will be available at VA Pride in Kanawha Plaza on Saturday, Sep 29. Excess donations will fund the group’s next project to install LGBTQIA historical lavender landmarks across the City of Richmond.
