In New York, Dr. Maria New has been telling her pregnant patients that they should be taking a steroid called dexamethasone, dex for short, to prevent over-masculinity in newborn females. According to New, the drug is said to help prevent the mother’s daughter from becoming a lesbian.
Dex is a steroid that New and some of her colleagues believe can prevent some of the outward signs of a more masculine female, specifically a small amount of evidence that it can prevent ambiguous genitals.
“To inject a fetus with some sort of drug to prevent physical features developing seems quite ridiculous and dangerous,” gynecologist Ellen Blair said.
Despite New’s numerous statements about Dex, it has not been approved by the FDA for treatment on fetuses New is attempting to have Dex approved for off-label use by conducting a smaller study in Sweden.
