Around 1:30 a.m., word broke out on Occupy’s Facebook that a police raid was imminent. The streets were closed off and cops were circling around downtown.
My writing associate, Ashley Andem, and I headed from the UR campus to record the event. We arrived to find the RVA police out in full force. Multiple streets around Kanawha Plaza had been closed off. The police were decked out in everything with riot gear, horses, guns, pepper spray guns, and tons of cars. Even a small winged aircraft circled the area, for hours. After clearing out the protestors they proceeded to bring in heavy machinery like dump trucks and bulldozers to clear up the plaza. The plaza was cleared of tents, supplies, signs and even the American Flags.
Numerous people had been arrested and are currently still in jail as of 4 a.m. Occupy Richmond will be holding a collective gathering at 8 a.m. and then a General Assembly at 11 a.m. They, also, announced an evening General Assembly at 5 p.m. Connect with their Facebook for the most up to date information on meetings and gatherings.
