During a reception for LGBT Pride month held at the White House last night, President Obama announced he would include Gender Identity in the list of protected classes for federal workers in a yet-to-be-signed executive order.
Obama first announced his intentions to sign an executive order protecting LGB employees earlier in June, last night’s announcement confirms the inclusion of Trans employees.
The executive order includes all federal employees and contractors, Virginia has over 300,000 federal employees in its jurisdiction according to a 2010 census by EyeOnWashington.com. About 10,000 of those live in Richmond.
Obama thanked activists and others who fought for the rights earned so far, and he thanked the LGBTQ community for their support in his work.
“You guys have shown what can happen when people of goodwill organize and stand up for what’s right,” said the President. “And we’ve got to make sure that that’s not applied just one place, in one circumstance, in one time. That’s part of the journey that makes America the greatest country on Earth.”
