I haven’t cried while playing a Mortal Kombat game since I was 12 and my best friend kept using Scorpions spear+shadow punch combo, but all that changes today.
The notoriously graphic and violent fighting game Mortal Kombat X, yes, in its 10th iteration, features a gay character for the first time, and how the game address the situation is heart-melting.
Kung Jin, a descendent of Kung Lao (the guy in blue/black garb with the blade hat), appears to be an exiled member of his family’s Shaolin Monk clan. In the new game, he comes to Mortal Kombat main-stay and God of Thunder Raiden looking for a purpose.
“Self loathing has always been an unfortunate part of your makeup,” advices the Thunder God as Jin stumbles into his temple. Raiden then pleads with the warrior to return to the ways of his ancestors and fight for Earth in Mortal Kombat.
“I can’t, they won’t accept [me]” he says.
“They care only about what is in your heart, not whom your heart desires,” the God replies.
