After a controversy in which a transgender woman was expelled from Miss Universe Canada, the Miss Universe organization stated today that it will formally change the pageant’s rules to allow transgender contestants as of 2013.
Earlier this year, contestant Jenna Talackova was disqualified from participating in the Miss Universe Canada pageant. Talackova transitioned four years prior to her disqualification, and had various state documents, including a driver’s license and passport, identifying hr as a woman.
After an outcry from LGBT rights groups, Donald Trump reinstated Talackova to the pageant last week. The official alteration to the rules was announced after consultations between the Miss Universe organization and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
