NEW YORK — Several hundredmarriage equality supporters turned out for a candlelight vigil in New York’s Times Square on Sunday evening, in a peaceful demonstration to mark this week’s historic events in which the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage bans and the Defense of Marriage Act.
“Rarely has a time called for dignified reflections and ‘giving witness’ to the moment,” noted civil rights leader David Mixner, who organized the event. “Not acknowledging the importance of those hearings in our lives is unacceptable.”

Supreme Court justices will hear arguments Tuesday on California’s Proposition 8ban on same-sex marriage and on Wednesday on the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as between one man and one woman.
