While marriage equality came to lesbian and gay couples last week, it’s still not easy being transgender in America. And HBO’s leading comedian and host of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver, put the spotlight on how poorly the media handles the conversation.
Sure, there have been positive strides made – Laverne Cox and Caitlyn Jenner – but lets face it, most of America is about as sensitive as sand paper on a lot of these issues.
“What do I call a transgender person, it’s so confusing!” says Oliver, mocking those who continue to be bewildered by the concept. “Actually, its pretty simple. Call them whatever they want to be called.”
Oliver then points out a number of celebrities who have chosen different names, like U2′s the Edge, and Puff Daddy’s numerous name changes, and we seemed to handle those pretty well.
