Last night Vice President Joe Biden posted a tweet showing him officiating the wedding of two White House staffers, identified only as “Brian and Joe.” In the tweet the Vice President said he “couldn’t be happier,” and that he married the couple at his house
Biden officiated over the wedding of two longtime White House staffers, Brian Mosteller and Joe Mahshie, at the Naval Observatory on Monday, according to ABC News.
He’d obtained a temporary certification to marry from the District of Columbia where the ceremony was held. It was a private event and not listed on the VP’s calendar.
Biden has long been a supporter of LGBTQ rights, with a stress in the “T.”
Back in 2012 he called transgender rights “the civil rights issue of our time” in a press pool in Florida after the election. He also came out in support of same-sex marriage before Obama when he said he was “absolutely comfortable” with the idea while Obama was still thinking the issue over.
At the intersection of politics, religion, law, social justice, and civil rights, The New Civil Rights Movement is a broadly cited media organization delivering news and opinion dedicated to the wide interests of the progressive and LGBT communities.
