How often do you hide your sexuality?
This sign is being held up as people exit onto Broad Street as the exit I-64 into Short Pump. A picture taken this afternoon has appeared on Facebook. Does anyone have any more info?
“Richmond, VA, is truly for all lovers… now is the time to let the world know how welcoming Richmond is.”
That sign (and those clowns) have been around for a long time. They’ve protested at assorted Pride Festivals since 2003 and although the sign was absent, I think they were the same entertaining folks that bullhorned the queuing masses at the GCCR presentation of the Sex Workers’ Art Show in Feb 2008.
Yeah they were at a few pride festivals– at one of them- we all took turns taking pictures in front of the banner- with a person standing in front of the s in sin- and laughed hysterically- they left not long after.
Lulz. Josh, you must be talking about Pride 2005, the first at the Farmer’s Market. That was the infamous Lady Bunny festival. Lessons learned.
The sin folks posted themselves across 18th Street from the market. When Lady Bunny began her ill-advised rap, they jumped up and down and petitioned the police on scene to arrest her. The police declined. The next day, of course that was all that was in the paper.
I’ve kept an informal eye on these folks for years. They are uniformly respectful, as least as much as one can be while calling me a sinner. I’ve spoken before with a couple of the group, and while their arguments are predictable, one-on-one, they’re not hateful. At my age, it’s hard to begrudge someone who professes concern for my well-being (however ill-informed).
