The LGBT Archive Collection at VCU features many items related to Richmond Gay Pride events.
One is a “Pride History.” It indicates Richmond’s first Pride event occurred on June 23, 1979, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion in New York City. The event started with a motorcade from Azalea Mall to Byrd Park for a picnic. Topping off the event was a dance at The Sheraton near Monroe Park.
Item number two is the 1987 Pride Program, in shades of purple. It listed events like the movie “Before Stonewall” at the VCU Business Building Auditorium on Friday, September 18, and a Lesbian Feminist Dance on Saturday, the 19th. Of course, it also listed the main Pride event, to take place on Sunday the 20th at The Carillon in Byrd Park.
Despite the fact that one in three women have abortions in their lifetime, the long-standing stigma surrounding the procedure still persists. Planned Parenthood Generation Action at Virginia Commonwealth University partnered with Richmond Reproductive Freedom Project to host an event in hopes to help change that.
