Tonight, the Gay Community Center of Richmond recognizes Guy Kinmen with a reception in his honor at 6 p.m. The GCCR in partnership with the Virginia Historical Society has named a special research award in honor of Kinmen.
The Guy Kinmen Research Award will provide a $500 grant to those researching topics such as LGBT studies, civil rights, and First Amendment issues. The award is open to residents of central Virginia as well as researchers who live beyond commuting distance.
In 1985, Kinmen helped organized a Billboard Project across Richmond. Billboards rented around the city announced “Someone You Know is Gay … Maybe Someone You Love.” To read more about this project and see a video interview with Kinmen, visit GayRichmond.com.
“He was the lead organizer during the March on Washington, and yet you rarely hear his name mentioned. It is in part because he was a gay man in a time when that was difficult to talk about in society.”
