On Saturday, August 13, 2011, the Valentine Richmond History Center presents its third annual Lesbian and Gay History Bus Tour. Leading up to the event, GayRVA.com will feature vintage photos from Beth Marshack’s “Lesbian & Gay Richmond” mirrored with images of the city today.
Then: Fan Free Clinic
In October 1970, Fan Free Clinic was created by volunteer medical professionals. This clinic was the first free clinic in Virginia. Located in the Emerson House on Floyd and Harrison Streets, the Fan Free Clinic focused mostly on women’s health and the prevention of transmissible diseases. Currently, the free clinic resides on Thompson Street in the Museum District and continues it’s AIDS/HIV outreach and serving the under-served.
Now: Virginia Commonwealth University Meeting Center
Since the early 1980’s, the old clinic building has served as the VCU Meeting Center. This building is used for receptions, lectures, workshops, seminars, and university and/or community meetings. The area surrounding the building is currently undergoing construction.
