In 1999, a small group of activists came together to build an organization that would make Central Virginia a safe, welcoming place where Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people could live and work free from discrimination, inequality and violence. They created the Richmond Gay Community Foundation.
They founded Diversity Thrift and Diversity Bingo, and made grants to groups that benefit LGBT people. Since that time over $600,000 has been donated to dozens of organizations that work with us to make Richmond a better place. Groups like ROSMY, Richmond Triangle Players, Equality Virginia and the Fan Free Clinic benefited because all of us donated, volunteered and worked so very hard to make it happen.
In 2008 the Richmond Gay Community Foundation opened Virginia’s first LGBT community center – the Gay Community Center of Richmond. We join together at the Gay Community Center of Richmond for concerts and musicals, for political debate and for the solemn remembrance of milestones and tragedies. We celebrate our pride here and we make news here.
Since we opened, more than forty groups have used our facilities for their own programming. We recently completed a comprehensive survey of our community’s programming needs – the largest such survey ever completed in Central Virginia. With the input we received and the commitment of generous supporters, we will expand programming in 2010 to make your community center as effective as any in the nation.
The Gay Community Center of Richmond would not exist without the passion and support of people like you, and we continue to need your help. While over 80% of our revenue comes from our income producing operations, we also rely on donations from our supporters.
The generosity of individuals like you helped create the Gay Community Center of Richmond, and it will help us grow. Please donate so we can continue our work serving Central Virginia’s LGBT community.
