LGBT advocacy group Equality Virginia has announced their legislative goals for the recently-begun 2012 session of the Virginia General Assembly.
One of the group’s stated top priorities is lobbying for SB263. This bill, sponsored by Sens. Douglas McEachin (D) and Adam Ebbin (D), would forbid public employment discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. The group has also announced its support for similar nondiscrimination legislation in the House of Delegates, including HB 613, HB 692, HB 694, HB 977 and HB 1099.
Equality Virginia has also given priority to the matter of lobbying nondiscriminatory adoption policies; in a controversial ruling in December of last year, Virginia’s Board of Social Services, in a decision endorsed by Gov. Bob MoDonnell, voted to allow private adoption agencies to discriminate on the basis of a prospective parent’s religion, sexual orientation or marital status. Equality Virginia has announced their support of pending legislation which would forbid such discrimination by law.
