Adam Ebbin has become the first openly gay state senator in Virginia with the Nov. 8 election. He was elected to the 30th district which houses parts of Alexandria, Fairfax, and Arlington.
The Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, which helps elect LGBT candidates into office across the United States, endorsed Ebbin and released a statement after last night’s win.
“We’re thrilled for Adam and for LGBT Virginians, who will finally have an authentic LGBT voice in the state senate,” Victory Fund President and CEO Chuck Wolfe said in the statement. “The Victory Fund has been proud to support Adam throughout his career. He’s been a persistent champion for fairness and equality, and we congratulate him.”
Despite the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex marriage last summer, many states still have language on the books which bans the practice and Virginia is on that list.
