The folks at Brother Help Thyself, a DC-based HIV/AIDS and LGBTQ support group are looking for a few good folks to fund. The group, which honored GayRVA with a business award back in 2014, organizes King’s Dominion’s annual Gay Days event every September at the park just north of RVA.
Check out details for the grant program below:
Brother Help Thyself’s (BHT) 2016 Grants Application process went live this afternoon. Those LGBTQ-serving 501(c)3s interested in applying for a grant from BHT must do so between now and 11:59pm on Wednesday, August 31. To qualify for consideration for a 2016 grant, organizations’ 2015 gross revenue must be below $2 million.
BHT awards grants from three funds:
Richard Van Der Karr Memorial HIV/AIDS Fund – Grants from this fund are designated specifically for programs related to HIV/AIDS services, prevention, and, education.
Medford Fund – Grants from this fund are for the purchase of tangible capital goods (such as computers, refrigerators, air conditioners, etc.) to be used in association with delivering services in the LGBTQ or HIV/AIDS communities.
General Fund – Grants from this fund are for the implementation of non-HIV/AIDS-related programs that add to the LGBTQ community support infrastructure and enrich the quality of life for members of the community. These programs include, but are not limited to athletic, cultural, educational, health, historic, and social programs.
The BHT board will, per usual, invite qualified applicants to grant hearings in the early fall. Those dates are still to be determined and will be posted on our website soon. Deliberations and decisions on grant amounts will be held through late November with applicants learning whether they will receive a grant in early December. BHT will award its 2016 grants at a reception in late January, 2017 in the District of Columbia.
Brother, Help Thyself has awarded 1,033 grants totaling $3.02 million since 1978 to 178 non-profits serving the LGBTQ communities in DC and Baltimore and points in between. For more information, visit www.brotherhelpthyself.org.
