A gym owner running for Charlottesville City Council, James Halfaday, has been receiving anti-gay messages since running for local office. Halfaday is the first openly gay candidate to run for the office and told the Daily Progress that he has received the comments on defaced fliers and via Facebook.
Halfaday, one of seven Democrats who’ll compete for three City Council nominations in Saturday’s party primary, said one of his promotional fliers was returned to his campaign mailing address on Aug. 7 with his face crossed out and the message: “Democrat Don’t Want You Homo.”
He’s also received harsh words like this: “Promoting perversion is nothing to be proud of in your campaign, and you will have to answer for what you are now doing one day. Move out of Charlottesville fagot[sic].”
The candidates competed in the Democratic primary on Saturday. Halfaday was not one of the three Democrats nominated that will be on the ballot of the Nov. 8 election. Halfaday’s campaign website is available here.
