CBS6 reports on the Indiana man that was turned away from donating blood because he looked gay. Jay Squires from the Gay Community Center of Richmond gives his take in the report.
“I felt much better about my donation.”
Jay Squires was not the only local activist interviewed for that report!
Unfortunately, CBS 6 left out nearly everything I said about the descrimination that peole face because their gender expression is outside of what is considered “normal”, for example, like the guy in the original report who “looked gay” because he was effeminant. CBS 6 failed to make the real connection between gender expression-based descrimination and how it affects both gay and straight people, as well as trans people. They never really communicated why I was part of the story, which is a little strange since they called me, not the other way around.
I’m still glad they did the story, but I wish they had not essentially turned it into a story (by using so much of Jay’s interview, and by asking a lot of questions that seemed to focus on that) about why it’s unfair that gay men can’t donate blood.
