President Obama has signed an updated Employment Non-Discrimination Act, an executive order which will extend workplace protections to all LGBT federal employees.
This means LGBT federal employees can no longer be fired for their sexual orientation or gender identity.
There are no exemptions for companies who could circumvent the law sighting religious beliefs, as some civil rights groups had feared in the wake of the SCOTUS Hobby Lobby decision.
This executive order will protect about 10,000 Richmond federal employees, and about 300,000 across the state.
LGBT employees of private companies across the state still lack workplace protections here in Virginia.
