Mimicking steps taken in Houston, TX, anti-transgender activists from California hoped to force people to use the restroom aligned with their bilogical gender, but failed to garner enough support to get the issue on the ballot
Privacy For All, the group behind the ballot initiative, was aiming to get the issue on the 2016 ballot, but failed to get the needed 365,880 signatures required by the state.
“You can be anything you want to be. This is apparently not just the motivational urging from a favorite teacher or coach, this is now the official policy of the Obama administration,” wrote Privacy For All on their website.
“Open access advocates believe that a boy that feels like a girl should be able to access the girls’ bathroom. But, that same boy also has access, as a boy, to the boys’ bathroom. Is the policy then that all individuals can access whatever bathroom they wish? Of course not.”
The Obama Administration, through the Department of Justice, has backed transgender students use of bathroom use through their interpretation of Title IX which guarantees equality for genders in publicly funded schools.
“Under Title IX, discrimination based on a person’s gender identity, a person’s transgender status, or a person’s nonconformity to sex stereotypes constitutes discrimination based on sex,” read a statement of support sent in July of this year for Virginia transgender student Gavin Grimm who is currently suing the Gloucester County school board over a policy which would force the boy to use the girls restroom or a separate restroom in the nurse’s office. “…The rural Virginia County’s new bathroom policy specifically violates this condition.”
“The people of California saw our opponents’ campaign for what it was — a blatant effort to undermine the rights and freedoms of transgender people,” Chad Griffin, the president of the Human Rights Campaign, said in a statement. “By categorically rejecting such discrimination, Californians have affirmed their support for the equal rights and dignity of all people. We, like the people of California, are committed to continue working to ensure that cruel and senseless efforts against our fellow community members are always stopped in their tracks.”
