According to a new report by the Southern Poverty Law Center, extremist hate groups in the United States have seen growth for the 12th consecutive year, including a 60% increase in anti-LGBT groups.
Although the most significant increase the SPLC found is in survivalist/militia groups, the SPLC also said that recent advances in LGBT rights have fomented “an intensification of anti-gay propaganda in certain quarters”.
“American Family Association official Bryan Fischer, for instance, said that ‘gays are Nazis,’ claimed that HIV does not cause AIDS but gay men do, and, for good measure, criticized black welfare recipients who ‘rut like animals,’” SPLC senior fellow Mark Potok says in the report.
The groups the SPLC classifies as anti-LGBT hate groups increased from 17 in 2010 to 2011.
