This weekend, Amazon.com had a major fail on its hands when its online system removed gay and lesbian themed books from their ranking system. With this response circulating around the blogosphere:
In consideration of our entire customer base, we exclude “adult” material from appearing in some searches and best seller lists. Since these lists are generated using sales ranks, adult materials must also be excluded from that feature.
It’s got the gays all up in a tizzy - we even got this sent to us about an e-mail petition. Amazon.com released a statement today, but not a formal apology to the community making people question their commitment to GLBTQ diversity. When you search “homosexuality” on their website, the first result is a title called “A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Homosexuality,” which obviously, many take offense to.
In another twist to this story, some guy with the online tag “Weev” is taking the credit for this glitch. More can be read about that on The Consumerist.
