At a Human Rights Campaign event this weekend actress Ellen Page come out as gay.
“I’m here, because I’m gay,” says Page from the podium, shakey and noticably scared. “I’m tired of hiding, I’m tired of lying by omission.”
The event, Time To Thrive, happens this weekend and features basketball player Magic Johnson and singer Lance Bass.
Page was a guest speaker at the event. She started her speech mentioning some of the inane press she recieves over seemingly meaningless things like when she wears sweat oants out in public.
“Why does this petite beauty insist on dressing like a masculine man?” quoted Page as she described one tabloid magazine cover she saw. “Because I like to be comfortable,” she responded.
The star of movies like Juno, Inception, and the X-men movies spoke about gender norms as a whole being a burden on society, and she mentioned actress Lavern Cox as someone doing good work on the issue.
“There are pervasive stereotypes that define how we are supposed to act, dress, and speak… the LGBT community knows this all too well.”
