The beauty of democracy is it is supposed to give a voice to the voiceless and empower those who are persecuted by the majority.
Sadly, if Republicans at the 2016 General Assembly have their way, we’ll be living in more of a theocracy.
Need proof? Check out our story on HB 663 which details Del. Mark Coles’ plan to force trans students to use the bathroom of their birth gender, not the gender they currently identify with. And if they don’t use the “correct” bathroom, Cole want cops to write them a $50 ticket.
The same thing applies to adult trans people in all state owned buildings – it’s a real punch in the eye for the trans community.
Now I admit this issue isn’t easy – many of us don’t know transgender people, and many more are probably thinking the worst: “Why should a boy be allowed in my daughter’s bathroom at school!”
We’ll get out of your own head for a second and realize these kids are not having an easy time with where they’re at. Imagine being unsure or confused with your gender at 11, when things are already freaking terrible. Now legislators want to come in and police where and how you pee, like that’s gonna help anybody.
The folks at ABC 8, in about as few words as possible, have tried to condense this issue into an online poll and it would be pretty cool if RVA came together and said “hey, lets not make life harder for trans kids for once” and filled out this poll.
This is literally the easy thing you could do today to help a group in need, so head on over to ABC 8 and throw some support for trans kids and vote for “the gender they currently identity” with.
