UPDATE 8:30 8/21 – According to a Facebook post on his mothers’s wall, Barnette has been found.
Local man Zachary Aaron Barnette has been reported missing since last Wednesday. Barnette, 6’4″ approx. 135 pounds, and 20-years-old and was last seen on on the 1300 block of W. Broad Street, according to Richmond Police.
“We have information and we are working on the case as a missing persons,” said RPD Information Officer Gene Lepley. “But he’s and adult and we have to balance the needs of a concerned mother and a man’s right to privacy.”
Lepley also said there currently is “no evidence that foul play has occurred or he’s in present danger.”
Barnette’s facebook profile currently lists him as a VCU student majoring in Spanish, however VCU could not confirm his current enrollment. (this story originally said he was a VCU student which we’ve since updated)
In a message posted on his facebook wall, Barnette’s mom, Sandra Smith Cumbea, plead for any information which could bring her son home:
“No one has heard from or seen him and he has not been on any of his social media,” she wrote. “We are very concerned for his wellbeing. I’m asking for prayers… In case someone has seen him. He is my gentle giant. Thank you all.”
Anyone with information about his disappearance is asked to contact Detective William Thompson at 804-646-3925.
Friends have said Barnette maybe have last been seen on Grindr before he went missing. Police couldn’t confirm any part of their investigation, however Lepley said the detective was aware of the Grindr account.
