The We Are All UVA campaign was started to highlight the diversity found at the Charlottesville based college. And little did they know the impact that would follow when two members of the swim team came out as gay along side three of their teammates in one post. (see the photo above)
While only one of the of the team members (Parker Camp) is identified via their coming out story on Outsports.com, it’s great to see this kind of support from straight allies. And this show of support from allies seems to be a core of the campaign.
“We all have multifaceted, dynamic experiences that shape our identities,” states the campaign’s mission. “However, our diverse experiences can be misrepresented, silenced, and siloed within the mainstream culture at UVA.”
The campaign goes on to stress diversity is more than a buzzword and they hope other members of the UVA community will join in to “make the mainstream culture here at UVa more inclusive.”
Here’s a snippet of Camp’s coming out letter. You can read the rest over at OurSports:
I really want to tell you something that’s been weighing on my chest for long time. I’ve found over the last week it’s easiest to be blunt and forth coming about it. I am gay.
I can almost feel the fear, shock, and confusion that must be overwhelming you right now having read those words. These are words many parents would rather not hear. It’s not necessarily out of lack of acceptance or support but fear of what’s ahead. You’re thinking of the many implications this has on my life and yours. Your mind is racing ahead to the hardships I’ll face, the opinions of family friends, the prejudice, hate, and discrimination that I am bound to see. Your fears are not ill founded.
