The body of Marco McMillian, an openly gay mayoral candidate from Clarksdale Mississippi, was beaten, dragged, and set on fire according to a family member close to the victim.
McMillian was found dead last week. He was believed to be the first openly gay candidate for public office in Mississippi’s history. Details about his death are still in question – the final results from his autopsy are due in a few weeks after a toxicology report is finished.
22-year-old Lawrence Reed has been charged with the murder. Reed was found in McMillian’s car after crashing it into another car on a highway near Coahoma, TN.. Reed was then taken to a near by hospital and treated for his injuries. He’s since been moved to the custody of the Shelby County Tenn,. Sherif’s Office.

Police have not clarified a motive yet, but a statement from the McMillian campaign said, “We feel that this was not a random act of violence based on the condition of the body when it was found.”
The Associated Press spoke to friends and family of McMillian in the area. One long time friend, Sissiretta Melton, said she had known McMillian since grade 7, called the death “dramatic” and couldn’t understand why this happened. “It’s just terrifying to everybody that knew him personally because you ask, ‘Why?’”
