RVA Street Style
One of the biggest trends in fashion right now is romantic 70s silhouettes, prints, and accessories. This is a great trend for summer and will be easy to transition into fall 2011. The trend places an emphasis on organic, breezy fabrics and organic color palettes.
For women, this trend really has endless possibilities. For women looking for young and flirty going out pieces, floral and paisley prints are a great choice. With a wide selection of fun floral dresses available from brands like Free People and Anthropologie, it’s an easy summer choice. If the silhouette is right, a brown or earth tone belt is a great addition. See these Richmond girls below for an example of floral done right!
Another option for going out or daywear is high-waisted shorts with a blousey cropped top. This look elongates the legs and who doesn’t want that? Shoe options are one of the best parts of this trend. Platform wooden shoes as well as espadrilles scream 70s fashion. Brown leathers, cork, and rope are key components of the look. It is more natural and effortless than we have seen in the past.
Women looking for more business appropriate options look no further. This trend is easy to translate into business approproate wardrobes. Again, an important component of the look is the waistline. Find a pair of high rise trousers like these below from Anthropologie.
Notice the wide leg of the pant. This paired with the fitted higher waist is both conservative and on trend. You can pair this look with a fitted blouse or even a blousier shirt with a feminine print. I would say choose a thicker heel with this look over a stiletto to complete the look.
Men’s fashion is trending more towards the Rock and Roll icons of the 70s such as Mick Jagger and Jimi Hendrix with accessories and silhouettes. The “Rock and Roll Scarf” is being seen on runways in variations from breezy sheer psychedelic print scarves ala Jimi to shorter scarves knotted at the neck. Fitted pants and fitted leather jackets remain on trend, with the addition of blousier dress shirts for men. This look is a strong look and if worn correctly looks AMAZING! Similar to women’s styles, earthier tones are prominent with the addition of a deep burnt sienna red in both pants and jackets.
