RVA Street Style
Richmonders are dealing with this heat the best way they know how… with minimal clothing. I took to the street to find people who are both embracing the elements while retaining a fashionable appearance.
This outfit speaks to two different trends for summer. A popular trend for tanks streaming into both men’s and women’s fashion is a lower armpit than usual. For men, this look can be even more extreme, as seen in this outfit, and leave the sides bare. This allows any breeze present a direct line to your body, which in this heat, can be a life saver. The olive green is a great statement color and a step away from the expected. The denim cutoff shorts are a Richmond staple for both comfort and versatility. My favorite piece of the ensemble is the necklace. The long length, rugged appearance and vintage feel of the piece is both masculine and trendy. This look can be easily created from items in your own wardrobe.
On a side note, this look works for women as well with the addition of a bandeau bra underneath for coverage.
Although it may be warm out, this second outfit is great for a number of reasons. I am a big supporter of women wearing oversized button ups via stores like american apparel with fitted bottoms. This maroon color is great paired with the black leggings and the AMAZING pop of turquoise in the shoes.
The top covers the three F’s: Fun, Feminine, and Funky. The black legging is a basic part of any wardrobe. When wearing leggings as pants, it is important to have a shirt long enough that you do not see the waistband of the leggings. It can be very hit or miss with leggings as pants, but one rule to never break is wearing a tight fitting top or tunic over leggings. It is way too much and does not flatter anyones shape, no matter how great.
Going back to the shoes, I really like what they are doing for this outfit. They are a great shape and design, but the color takes the cake. They are a great accent for any wardrobe that needs a little something extra. An alternative to the leggings for people wanting to take this outfit out for the summer is black bike shorts sold in a number of places. I purchased a pair from American Apparel and they are a great length and fit and have lasted through a year of wears.
