Drop the Gatorade; instead have a glass of red wine on your next marathon/workout.
Doctors and my mom both have said, to keep our hearts healthy, exercise regularly, eat fiber and vegetables and drink moderate amounts of red wine. My eyes grew when I heard the two words, “red wine.” Yes, red wine because the skin of red grapes contains a compound resveratrol, which is thought to contain life-enhancing properties.
Johan Auwerx and his colleagues at the Institute of Genetics and Molecular and Cellular Biology in Illkirch, France conducted a mice study and later posted their results in publication, Cell. An ordinary lab mouse will run about one kilometer — five-eights of a mile — on a treadmill before collapsing from exhaustion. However, mice were given resveratrol, the major component of red wine, ran twice as far. Even better, the mice had a reduced heart rate and energy-charged muscles, just as if trained athletes would.
A Harvard Medical School study found that the cholesterol-fighting antioxidant resveratrol produces the same life-lengthening effects as calorie reduction. Other research has determined that red wine is full of flavonoids, which are antioxidants that lower the risk of heart disease.
Risk of dehydration on race day?
Don’t freak out about being dehydrated or hung over on race day. As long as you are accustomed to drinking wine, drinking extra water and taking in other carbohydrates, one glass of wine with dinner the night before race day will not hurt. There still is no excuse to party like a rockstar at the bar before your marathon! As always, eating the right foods and sleep are also important. Remember, for every alcoholic beverage you drink, drink an eight-ounce glass of water.
