Everyone’s heard the phrase “be careful what you wish for…” I would say that is the best way to describe my romantic and some not-so-romantic encounters in 2010.
When I was in high school I used to look at other couples with yearning to be able to have that affection with someone else. I felt like it would never happen for me. In early college I was clueless to dating and how to meet guys and never did.
Finally, something clicked halfway through college and I’ve been dating ever since, but still yearned for that person that I truly cared about.
This year I went on a string of horrible, awkward and downright mind-boggling dates with some guys – I’m sure there was a girl in there somewhere – and eventually when I stopped looking I found my ex; Shades.
I guess that’s how it works, it finds you… and boy did it. He was the last person I thought I’d ever want to be with. The whole thing lasted for about 5 months and left me emotionally exhausted. The thing is, I look back and I got exactly what I wanted for all those years and everything that came with it: doubt, anger, happiness, confusion, sadness and the whole lot of other emotions that I didn’t even know I had.
We eventually broke things off, and I got back to dating with a new perspective – that self-realization that you get from a failed relationship. You live and learn, and I think that things like that get you to where you are today. As Jimmy Buffet says, “Wrinkles only show where the smile have been.” and I think that’s a great way to look it.
After more dating I met a great, sweet and endearing guy. Sometimes you think you get what you want and realized that things just have a weird way of working out. That endearing guy is now my boyfriend.
So after all the crap, bad dates and tears I can say that I got my wish.
