Maybe Next Thanksgiving
I was walking around the mall the other day and I noticed that each year the Christmas decorations come out just a bit sooner than the year before. The garland was up tied with little red bows. It’s not even Thanksgiving yet!
I continued to walk around and the next thing I noticed was all of the couples. Now, it could be said that there are a million couples walking around any given mall all year round, but during the holidays it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.
I noticed that there wasn’t that “someone” for me, so I was seeing everyone else’s “someones.”
The holidays are a magical time of year where you want to have that special someone to be with. It’s the time where you’re in that relationship and maybe it’s new and you want to have that talk with your boyfriend or girlfriend about coming to your family’s Thanksgiving dinner.
Sadly, I’ve never had a boyfriend to bring around to my family, but last Thanksgiving my dad brought not only his new girlfriend to Thanksgiving, but her two grown daughters as well.
Now, this was a sight for me and I truly felt bad for those two girls. It’s funny how at the time friends and lovers meeting your family seems like a great idea…. and then they actually meet and you realize how awkward it can be.
My dad, his girlfriend, the daughters, my brother and I walk up to the house. In my family we kiss on the lips. It’s kind of our thing and I don’t think the daughters were ready for this. My great aunt, whose house we were visiting, leans in for a hug and a kiss. The daughters are taken back and give their cheeks. Smooth move.
We get inside and the kitchen is filled with piles of food; turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, macaroni and all different kinds of stuffing. We get behind the herd of family members already pouncing for food.
We sit down at a table with some of my cousins and everyone immediately starts ranting about the “old” times. The daughters on both sides of me looked overwhelmed and became very quiet. I chimed in trying to bring them into conversation at no avail. My dad’s girlfriend was doing much better than her daughters. My great aunt had enveloped her in conversation at another table.
Around the holidays I do want to have someone to bring home to my family, but I will say after last year’s events, it can be work. And it’s Thanksgiving… I just want to EAT! I’ll let a boyfriend be my New Year’s resolution and that way I can by pass the awkward holiday meetings and greetings.
