Being a lesbian can be complex, sometimes very intense, and can occasionally drive you crazy. That great date that turns into someone wanting to move in the next day or those problems keep coming up with a girlfriend or an ex.
I have been at many crossroads as a lesbian and working things out with myself, as well as in relationships with other women. Books are one of the daily things that I have enjoyed during all these crossroads in my life. There could be more good lesbian books out there, but I have compiled a list of a few that I find interesting. Some of these are for pure fun, others silly but useful, and some are just good reads.
The first book comes to mind when I think of lesbian literature. Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown came out in the 70′s and follows a woman from her younger years into her adult life as a lesbian, hardships and all. A great read that feels like part of the lesbian culture.
Choices by Nancy Toder is light and fun telling about two women that have a series of meetings. They do not see each other for many years and travel separate roads. The scenes between these two women make the story.
Annie on my Mind by Nancy Garden is in the young adult section of the bookstore. This book speaks to anyone that came out or had hardships in school at a young age because of being a lesbian. Garden tells the story of two best friends in middle school and what they go through when they realize they want to be more than friends. I read it for the first time as an adult and could connect it to my own experiences.
I giggle like a schoolgirl when I flip through these next two books.
I found the The Inflatable Butch at a used bookstore and knew I had to have it. Author Ellen Orleans shares a series of funny and sarcastic essays about lesbian stereotypes and ridiculous questions that people have asked. Read it when you’re having a bad day or just display on the coffee table. The cover will be enough to strike up conversation.
Box Lunch by Diana Cage is all about; you guessed it, lesbian sex. If you have ever wondered anything or had questions, the chances are you will find the answer in this book. The book’s writing and layout makes it fun to read and will make you laugh at times.
