It was a bright and sunny Saturday morning. My dog and myself were itch’n to get out of the house, with only one goal in mind (though different goals between the two of us)
He wanted a walk to stretch his tiny mutt legs.
I wanted sweet, sweet home made donuts.
All that was left was convincing my boyfriend that our needs for walks and sugary confections were greater than his need for sleep. After much deliberation, a deal was struck and we were on our way… on our way to Dixie!
instant mouth watering
The tiny plot on the eastern tip of Carytown was packed to the brim with customers and bakers. There is no sitting room inside, and only a medium-sized display case to tempt the sense. The massive donut sign out front is a dead give away to it’s commitment to donut-mastery, possibly harkening back to donut shops of olde (I keep thinking of the Simpsons famous Lard Lad sign.)
Simpsons’s Lard Lad Vs. Dixie’s giant donut
I had seen an interesting post on Dixie’s Facebook page earlier in the week – “chocolete amaretto cheesecake” donuts on display in sub-par cellphone camera resolution. This was all I needed. I had to try them myself.
Now Dixie’s donuts are not colossal – the sit neatly in the palm of your hand. Something I should appreciate as a I am constantly aware of my carb and caloric intake – but lets face it, I wouldn’t have complained if the donut was bigger than my head. But either way – large or small – those donuts were absolutely incredible.
Top – Chocolete Amaretto cheesecake
Bottom – German Chocolate Cake
Dense, yet light and flavorful – the Chocolete amaretto cheesecake donut was even better than it sounded. I also got myself a german chocolate donut – chocolate batter, topped with chocolate icing, and a dollop of a coconut-pecan frosting in the middle. It was heavenly.
So consider Dixie for your next donut adventure. I’m still forgiving myself for the less-than-healthy excursion, but I figure I wont make a habit of it. Or will I?
