Dominion River Rock: Filthy 5k Mud Run & James River Scramble Trail Run (May 13 and 14, 2011) How about a weekend full of running and outdoor festivities? The second annual Dominion Riverrock festival, Richmond’s own sports and outdoors festival highlighting the riverfront drew over 3,000 participants and over 25,000 spectators to Brown’s Island on May 14-15. These record numbers make Dominion Riverrock one of the largest outdoor sports festivals in the United States.
Friday starts with the Filthy 5k Mud Run starting at Browns Island, running through the woods in Belle Isle, across the Lee Bridge, and finally jumping into a large pool of mud, inches away from the finish line. Hose off and enjoy the evening with a free beer (for participating) and an outdoor concert!
How about a Saturday run? The James River Scramble 10k trail run takes you through the rocks and woods around Browns Island, Canal Walk, James River Park, and the floodwall. Be prepared to play leapfrog on the river rocks! You’ll be working out all your muscles on this course.
Carytown 10k (May 15, 2011) Feeling more ambitious? Sign up for the Carytown 10k following the Dominion River Rock’s Friday and Saturday races. That’s right, three races in three days. I’ve done it and got a sweet medal at the end! In its seventh year, produced by the Richmond Road Runners Club, the race begins in front of the Cary Court Shopping Center. The course is relatively flat and features scenic Cary Street and Grove Avenue.
