Fitness On A Budget
Everyone’s wallet is a little tighter and it’s not because of those skinny jeans. Despite economic woes, health and fitness remain a priority in your life. While fancy gyms and commando-style workout groups are all the rage, they can come at a hefty cost. Not to worry, you may be more prepared than you thought! Working out on your own can be cost effective while still achieving the results you desire to obtain or maintain.
All would agree that the obvious answer is to go for a run, and after purchasing running shoes, it truly is an inexpensive option. There are plenty of places to run locally in GayRVA. Try enjoying the scenery while running on Monument Ave or at Three Lakes Park and Byrd Park to name a few.
If you want to cover more ground, cycling ranks at the top of the list. Whether you chose a stationary bike or to hit the open road or trail you are sure to find a workout through cadence and grade. West Creek offers a great path for all levels of cyclist, as well as many local parks.
Lastly, swimming is probably the least expensive and sexiest way to get your cardio fitness. The next time you’re working on your tan, take a jump into the pool or river and swim a few laps. Continues strokes and kicking are sure to tighten and tone while pushing your heart rate to cardio ranges.
If you own your own set of weights, more power to you. Otherwise, I have two words for you: Body Resistance! Believe it or not, you can workout the most popular sections of your body by using your own weight as resistance.
For your upper body, start with push-ups and tricep dips. Form your chest and arms for tank top season! If you’re already a pro, take these exercise to the next level by elevating your feet. The higher your feet are off the ground the more resistance you provide. What’s level 3? Slow your movements and pause at the lowest point of each repetition.
For your lower body, start with squats and lunges. These exercises will target your thigh, quads and most importantly, your glutes. To add intensity, sink lower into each exercise. Take it to the next level by adding weight, hold books, or any household items will do the trick.
Cherry on top
Don’t forget about your core. Always remember to keep your core activated. If you don’t know how, pretend you are bracing your stomach for a punch while still breathing normally. You can do this while going through your cardio and weight training routine. Putting it all together is the best way for you to get a fulfilling and energizing workout. Work hard to raise your heart rate, move into mixed strength, rinse and repeat and finish out with an abs routine.
