Updated 3-10-2011: GayRVA contacted Grindr just to see how large the apps reach is in the Richmond area. A representative from the web company responded,”We have 8,496 active users in the Richmond area. The average users logs on 9 times a day spending on average 8 hours using the system.”
Popular gay dating and hookup app Grindr has added another platform to their roster. In addition to the iPhone and Blackberry, the application is now available on Android devices.
Grindr allows users to create profiles and geographically locate others nearby. The premium version of the app costs $4.97 per month and removes banner advertising.

In the two years after it launched, Grindr has grown to be a not-so-underground hit among gay men in urban areas — more than 56,000 users are in the New York area. The service currently sees 3,000 new users join each day, and the average user spends 1.3 hours using the app on a daily basis.
According to New York Magazine, the company is working on a similar platform for straight men and women.
