Lifetime released an extended preview for its original movie “House of Versace” which airs on Saturday October 5, 2013 at 8:00 pm. According to Lifetime, this movie is based off of Deborah Ball’s book “House of Versace: The Untold Story of Genius, Murder and Survival.”
The movie chronicles Donatella Versace’s life in the Versace house after her brother Gianni Versace (who founded the company Versace in 1978) was fatally shot and killed by Andrew Cunanan on July 15, 1997. Following his death, Donatella became the head of design and her older brother Santo Versace became the CEO of the brand.
Gina Gershon plays Donatella Versace and brings all the sass and bluntness that Donatella is known for while Claire Nadon (Costume Designer) captures the essence of Donatella’s flamboyance and stylish outfits. The movie starts right at the end of Gianni’s life which ironically was the height of his career. As Donatella is thrown into the world of Versace, she falls victim to drug abuse and addiction and came close to bankrupting the company.
After she enters rehab and completes the program, she then returns to Versace and builds a powerful international fashion house that stays true to the Versace brand and vision.
After the movie airs on Lifetime, at 10:00 p.m., Lifetime will air “Versace: Beyond the Headlines”, which is an hour long, detailed documentary about Gianni Versace’s start in the fashion industry. The documentary also includes interviews with friends and acquaintances of Gianni Versace along with police detectives and criminologists who try to explain the designer’s tragic death.
Nobody knows why he was targeted and shot by Andrew Cunanan as Cunanan took his own life eight days after the murder.
Gina Gershon talked with Billy Rush and Kit Hoover on Access Hollywood recently about becoming Donatella Versace although the two have never met. Gershon admits that at first she wasn’t too sure about playing Donatella but agreed to get involved after she read the script saw Donatella as a heroine. When asked if she wanted to know what Donatella was going to say about the movie, Gershon rolled her eyes playfully and jokingly said, “She’ll probably be like ‘oh, you should have done better.’”
