Christopher Murphy is throwing himself a very special birthday party this Saturday to benefit the Gay Community Center of Richmond. In celebration of his 30th birthday, the GCCR’s newest board member has cultivated Alter/Ego – an art show and dance party to raise money for the organization.
“It’s a milestone birthday for me and I wanted to do something big.” Murphy said. “It highlights people that do a lot of work within the community. You’ll see a lot of familiar faces.”
At 8 p.m., the art exhibit captures different sides of individuals in Richmond’s LGBT community. Each subject was photographed multiple times to capture these unique perspectives.
Two Richmond-based photographers and GayRVA.com contributors partnered with Murphy on bringing the event to fruition.
Between Eric Russell and Sylvia Devoss, the pair have photographed over twenty subjects for Alter/Ego.
Russell has been shooting in Richmond for years for organizations like ROSMY, Virginia Pride, and the Richmond Men’s Chorus. His photography has also sent him internationally to capture bodybuilders and heavy lifters.
Murphy and Devoss bring their digital composite skills to the exhibition by layering multiple photos of each subject to create an Alter/Ego. Devoss calls her style Artography and just recently begun creating Alter/Ego photos and to tell the stories of individuals.

At 9 p.m., the party begins with dancing and DJ Alex Funk. Alvion Arnell Davenport hosts a drag show with some of Richmond’s local talent.
Murphy was approached to join the GCCR’s board from his work with Virginia Pride.
“I think the Center has great resources that many people aren’t aware of,” he says. “It’s a great honor to work with the board and find out everything that is still in the plans for the GCCR.”
Alter/Ego opens Saturday, December 18 with a reception from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the GCCR Gallery. A dance party and drag show begins at 9 p.m. in the event hall with $5 suggested donation. A cash bar and appetizers will be available. The GCCR is located at 1407 Sherwood Avenue.
