Just over a century old, Ariadne auf Naxos is a mixture of slapstick comedy and beautiful music. The story follows an opera-within-an-opera narrative which makes the audience examine the concept of art with a liberal sprinkling of laughs and an rare view behind the scenes of an opera house.
Christina Pier, in the title role, was vocally firm, rich throughout her range — a true Strauss soprano.
The other standout was Audrey Luna as Zerbinetta; the coloratura was impressive, though not effortless, and she truly made a meal of her role.
