Two events this weekend aim to highlight RVA’s LGBTQ Latinx communities
Southerners on New Ground (SONG,) a regional group aiming to elevate voices of LGBTQ communities of color in the South, is hosting two events this weekend and they hope you get the chance to come out and show your support.
The first event is a cookout at Fonticello/
“Come kick it with us!” reads the message on their Facebook event. “We know that in this current moment after #PulseOrlando and post the Supreme Court’s decision on DACA/DAPA, it is crucial that we come together to celebrate our lives, to uplift each other’s spirits and to build power and community as LGBTQ Latinx folks.”
Below is text from the event’s page in Spanish:
Latinx LGBTQ Parrillada/Cookout
After the Cookout, Godfrey’s will open its doors to the incredibly successful Latinx dance party Fuego.
Fuego was created by Salem Acuña, a long time SONG member who has since moved to DC, but the party series has returned to the area to give a space for Latin LGBTQ folks as there are few other clubs in RVA specifically for them.
“The whole idea behind Fuego is for Latin@ LGBTQ people to be able to enjoy Latin music from Raggaeton to Bachata to Salsa to Cumbia in a space that feels like it is ours,” Acuña said back when we first spoke to him about the party series. One of the event’s stand out qualities is the music which focuses more on the tunes Latinx people grew up with.
Fuego is an 18+ event and costs $5 at the door.
Below are details about the event in Spanish via the event’s facebook page:
