The producer behind the popular, award winning Amazon prime show, “Transparent” has come out with a new documentary series celebrating transgender people in history.
Rhys Ernst premiered his short docuseries, “We’ve Been Around” Tuesday across four websites including People.co, EW.com, Essence.com and Advocate.com.
The series is a partnership with Focus Features, Time Inc., and The Advocate. According to GLAAD.org, Ernst collaborated with the transgender community to research and create the films.
“We’v Been Around” includes “Transparent” actress Alexandra Billings and trans blogger and equality advocate Monica Roberts.
“Trans people have always existed, and have lived many different lives,” Ernst told GLAAD.org. “The central theme of “We’ve Been Around” is stated in the title. We’ve been here, throughout time, often hidden in plain sight. These stories show us just how important it is to share our histories.”
“S.T.A.R,” which premiered on People.com and Advocate.com follows Silvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson who were involved in the Stonewall Riots of 1969.
Debuting on Advocate.com and EW.com, “Little Axe” features popular gospel trans singer Wilmer Broadnax.
Transgender gay man and AIDS activist Lou Sullivan is also profiled on EW.com and and Advocate.com.
Albert Cashier, a trans man who fought during the Civil War is profiled on People.com and Advocate.com and trans woman Lucy Hicks Anderson is profiled on Essence.com and Advocate.com telling the story of Anderson being a woman of color during Prohibition and how she fought to protect her marriage rights after being outed.
