These local disco-punk freaks are heading out of town with style, grace, and panache, and you can be part of it for free!

It’s starting to seem like spring is finally here, and just in time for spring break (well, for some people… I feel truly sorry for those who had theirs two or three weeks ago), local disco-punk group Toxic Moxie is gearing up for their first tour of the year. It’s a 10-day jaunt that will take them across the northern midwest, and it all kicks off this Thursday night with a performance at Champion RVA. This show is the latest installment of Champion’s live music Thursdays, an always-free weekly series that has been livening up the Richmond music scene for most of the past year. It’ll make a great tour kickoff party, especially for you, since you get to see Toxic Moxie for free!
While it seems hard to believe, the fact is that Toxic Moxie have been livening up the Richmond scene with their unique brand of groovy, danceable postpunk for over half a dozen years. And while they’ve released three EPs during that time, they still haven’t graced us with a full-length. All of that is about to change, though, with the results of their first trip to a real studio set to be released this year in the form of their debut LP. So far, only one song has been released, but “Nobody’s Baby” is the kind of appetizer that’ll just make you even more excited for the main course.
Toxic Moxie will be joined at Champion and on the first few days of their tour by Baltimore indie-punk group Natural Velvet. This group also formed in 2012, but have issued quite a bit more material over their six-year lifespan than Toxic Moxie. Last year saw the release of their third album, Mirror To Make You, which is the group’s harshest yet, cranking up the vitriol to mix their more shoegaze-y earlier style with a decidedly punk rock approach. The result resembles other bands who’ve gone through similar progressions, most notably White Lung, and is sure to help shake off those mid-week doldrums.
Toxic Moxie and Natural Velvet will make up a powerful dynamic duo that’s sure to blow the roof off Champion Brewing Company’s Richmond location with fury, energy, and ferocious fun. They’ll be joined by local RVA punk newcomers Railgun for a regular triple threat of killer music sure to give you a jumpstart on the weekend.
The show will take place at Champion Brewing Company, located at 401 E. Grace St. Doors open at 6, music lasts from 7 until 10, and the show is free and all-ages. For more info, click here.
