Ellie Quinn, a Richmond-based burlesque producer organized the show with Lily Stitches from New Jersey. Quinn, who acted as Mallory Archer in Richmond’s comedy/Burlesque tribute to Archer, describes her typical routines as “nerdlesque,” a branch of the performing art that focuses on geek, nerd and pop culture.
“Nerdlesque is fantastical alchemy combining burlesque and sexy, brave, beautiful nerds of all shapes, sexes and sizes,” according to http://jojostiletto.com/. “As nerd culture merges with the mainstream, nerdlesque too is evolving the art of burlesque. Across the world, performers are creating genre-defining acts: some serious, most sexy and fun.”
“I’ve always wanted to do an Alex Mack routine and I always thought it would be fun and nostalgic to do a 90s Nickelodeon show,” said Quinn. “In my travels I met someone who liked that idea as much as I did… so this is our crazy burlesque tribute to our childhood.”
Quinn and Stitches put out a casting call in February, which drew people from New Jersey, Washington D.C. and Richmond.
How will Stripelodeon differ from a traditional burlesque show? “We do have one girl who will do classical, but the rest, it’s all character driven. It’s going to be more silly, zany, more out there” than normal burlesque shows, says Quinn.
What acts can you expect at Stripelodeon? Catdog, Alex Mac, Blues Clues, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters Wild Thornberrys and more. The show’s host, Ray Bullock, will spend half the show dressed as Marc Summers and the other half as everybody’s favorite Richmonder, Doug Funny.
Quinn has also booked vendors for the show, so you can take Stripelodeon souvenirs home with ya. Illustrators Lee and Bert Lacy will be selling original works and will be taking submissions. The Lacy brothers are also designing an illustrated cast photo, which can be purchased. Con Amor will sell jewelry; Puppie Buffe will be selling her Tasty Pasties, and Molding Mad Studios will be selling handmade clay Nickelodeon figures.
Lily Stitches (NJ), Ellie Quinn, Taylor Sweet (NJ), Reverend Valentine (DC), Scarlet Starlet, Siren Sivette, and Dante the Inferno will perform.
